  1. Solon Solitaire Readme File
  2.   PLAYING SOLON SOLITAIRE GAMES
  3.  
  4. To play Solon Solitaire, simply copy SOLON1.EXE, *.SOL and *.HLP to a 
  5. subdirectory.  Then type SOLON1 in that subdirectory, highlight the game
  6. that you want to play, press Enter and have fun!
  7.

  9.   HELP FILES
  10.  
  11. If you need help in playing a game, just press <F1> while in that game for
  12. complete instructions.  Sometimes, help will start in a particular section,
  13. such as MESSAGES.  Help will attempt to start in the most relevant area,
  14. depending on the state of the game.  MESSAGES would appear if help was
  15. requested when an error message had appeared.  If help cannot guide the
  16. user to a relevent section, it will always start in the GENERAL RULES
  17. section.  <Tab> and <Shift-Tab> can then be used to quickly move among the
  18. sections.  <F1> also works from the Solon Solitaire menu program.  The help
  19. files (*.hlp files) are plain ASCII files and may be read from DOS or
  20. printed.

  22. The help files all have a similar format.  The first section is always
  23. GENERAL RULES.  This section tells how to play the game with cards.  It is
  24. a good guide to the general rules used in programming each game, and should
  25. be read prior to playing the game.
  26.  
  27. Next come sections on DEFINITIONS, which defines several terms used in the
  28. help file and in playing solitaire in general, and SCREEN DESCRIPTION,
  29. which tells what the various boxes and messages on the screen are.

  31. Finally, we get to PLAYING THE GAME.  This section explains how the Solon
  32. Solitaire game in question is played, what keys are used and some things to
  33. expect.  This section must be read.
  34.  
  35. Next, special sections may be included for a game.  Klondike has a section
  36. on DRAW OPTIONS, while La Belle Lucie includes FINAL SHUFFLE QUESTIONS.
  37. These sections appear when appropriate for the game.
  38.  
  39. A section on MESSAGES is used to explain many of the error messages and
  40. questions that may be encountered during play.
  41.  
  42. At the end of each help file is a section on Solon Software, and how to
  43. register the software.  You are encouraged to read this section, and to
  44. take pity on us and send in a few bucks.

  47.   SUPPORTED SYSTEMS
  48.  
  49. Solon Solitaire should run on any kind of IBM PC compatible computer.  No
  50. specific display is required, but the games have been designed to use
  51. color.
  52.  
  53. If only a monochrome display is available, use 'SOLON1 /M' to start the
  54. game.  '/M' (Monochrome) causes the games to run in 2 colors, and will
  55. also work for color screens.  In monochrome mode, black cards are displayed
  56. using a normal white on black, while the red cards are use a brighter
  57. white on black.  The monitor's brightness and intensity may need to be
  58. adjusted for the difference between black and red cards to be apparent.
  59. The games look far better, and are easier to play, when a color screen can
  60. be used.

  62. If display problems are encountered, try using 'SOLON1 /NF' to start the
  63. menu.  The '/NF' (Not Fast) tells the program to use the computer's BIOS
  64. instead of writing to the screen.  This will slow the games down, but may
  65. make them playable.  This will only work if the BIOS is IBM compatible.
  66. The /NF and /M switches may be used together, but must be separated from
  67. each other and from the game name by a space.

  69. These games have been designed to run under MS-DOS, version 2.0 or later.
  70. While they will run under Windows, Windows should be told (through a PIF
  71. file) that they write directly to the screen, unless the /NF switch is
  72. used.
